"그것은 원인과 결과가 뒤바뀐 것이라 해야 할 것입니다.
제대로 된 순서가 아닌 것이지요."
석파는 미간을 찌푸리며 이야기했다.

"인과는 순서가 없다네. 그물처럼 생겼지."
길현은 담담하게 말했다.

"이해하기가 힘듭니다."
석파는 쓴웃음을 지었다.

"대부분의 결과라는 것들은 사실 원인을 찾기 힘든, 그저 일어난 현상일 때가 많다네.
무엇 때문에 일어났다 하지만 그것이 아니어도 같은 결과가 일어나기도 하고 때론 같은 원인이 다른 결과를 만들기도 한다면 그것을 어찌 원인이라 할 수 있겠는가?

여러 일들이 동시에 혹은 차례대로 일어난 것뿐인데, 저마다 편한 것을 골라 그 일이 일어난 이유라 억지 부리는 것이지.
왜 그 일이 일어났는지 진실로 그것을 알 수 있기란 쉽지 않은 일이라네.

원인과 결과의 순서를 뒤집어도 자연스럽게 보인다면 원인이란 것이 그저 먼저 일어난 일을 넘어선 의미를 가질 수 있겠는가?"

길현은 먼 산에 눈을 두고 미소를 머금으며 말꼬리를 흐렸다.

They say it happened for some reason, but even if that is not the case, the same result may happen.
If the same cause sometimes produces different results, how can it be called a cause?

Many things just happen at the same time or one after the other, but each person picks the one that is convenient and uses it as the reason why it happened.
It's not easy to truly know why something happened.

If cause and result seem natural even if they are in the opposite order, can a cause have meaning beyond just what happened first?"
Scott looked at the distant mountain, smiled, and slurred his words.
