* The Old Man of Gombaeryeong
At the entrance to Gombaeryeong,
there is an old country house.
An old man who lived there
would sit in a corner of the yard,
watching the people
who passed along the trail in front of his house,
letting the hours go by.
Whenever someone stopped
to say a word,
his dull afternoon would come to an end,
and become a pleasant time of conversation.
"You live in such a wonderful place."
"The mountain trail is narrow. Are you going hiking?"
"Yes. Even so, it is so quiet and peaceful,
with hardly anyone around. I like it very much."
"The trail is so narrow
that when I go up to gather a load of firewood,
the branches along the way keep catching on it..."
"Ha-ha, I can imagine."
"Still, there is a stream running along the trail,
so it is a good place to climb slowly, taking your time.
But for me, sitting here in the yard
and watching people pass by is the best of all..."
"It must be nice
to sit here and take your time,
looking out at such beautiful scenery."
"Oh, don't ask.
I had surgery for stomach cancer not long ago,
so all I can eat is porridge.
I have no strength these days,
so I have no choice but to spend half the day sitting here..."
"You have such a kind face.
May I take a photograph of you?"
"Ha-ha, What would you want to take a picture of an old man like me for...?
If it turns out well, I'd be glad if you sent me a copy..."
We talked about this and that,
and then the old man shyly said,
"Would you like me to make you a cup of coffee?"
"No, thank you. I'm fine."
I thought I could not bring myself to accept even a cup of coffee
from an old man who was already having difficulty getting around.
I turned around and continued down the mountain.
Later, sitting in the car and putting away my camera equipment,
it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps that "Would you like me to make you a cup of coffee?"
had been the old man's shy way of making a little money for his living expenses.
If only I had looked a little more closely at his face,
if only I had listened more carefully to his words,
perhaps I would have understood what was in his heart...
If only I had taken my eyes from the viewfinder and seen his heart,
perhaps I could have shared a warm cup of coffee with him...
