마음속 모닥불 (A Small Fire Within) (대화,Dialogue 6) -A

길현은 불꽃을 바라보며 잠시 말을 줄였다가
다시 이어 나갔다.

"가능하면 부지깽이를 손에 들고 있으라는 이야기라네.
하지만 그것을 쥐었다고 해서
잘 타는 불을 자꾸 쑤셔대면
연기도 많이 나고 자칫 꺼지기도 하지.
부지깽이는 그저 불이 지나치게 커지거나 꺼지지 않게 하려는 것이지,
자주 쓸 일은 없다네.
불을 적당히 잘 타게 하고 있으면
그 열기로 이렇게 밝고 따뜻하게 지낼 수 있지 않은가?"

길현은 이제는 작아진 모닥불에
부지깽이로 쓰던 나뭇가지를 던져 넣었다.

Scott paused for a moment, gazing into the flames,
then continued.

"It is best, if possible,
to keep the poker in hand.
Yet even with it in hand,
if one keeps stirring a well-burning fire,
there will be much smoke,
and it may even go out.
The poker exists only to prevent the fire
from growing too large or dying out;
it is not something to be used often.
If the fire is kept burning well,
its warmth alone is enough
to live in brightness and warmth."

Scott then tossed the stick he had been using as a poker
into the now-diminished fire.
