* 남프랑스에서 쓰는 편지

이곳의 햇살이 참 아름답습니다.

이런 빛이 내려앉은 풍경 속에서 캔버스를 펴면
누구라도 허공을 떠다니는 빛들을
붓으로 담아내려 했으리라 고개를 끄덕입니다.

아른거리는 공기를 가로지르며 춤추던 빛은
고흐의 그림에서 보았던 그것이었습니다.

빛이 아름다운 지중해...
그리고 그 바람이 닿는 남프랑스 프로방스 지역을 다니고 있습니다.

마르세유에서 출발해서
고흐의 '해바라기'와 '밤의 카페'를 그렸던 아를을 거쳐
이제 엑상프로방스입니다.

폴 세잔의 고향이었고 그가 말년을 보낸 도시입니다.
세잔이 수십 번 화폭에 담았던 생트 빅투아르산...
그는 말년에 그림을 그리기 어려울 때조차도
그 산을 바라보았을 것 같습니다.

처음 온 곳인데
인상주의 작품들에서 많이 보았던
익숙한 구릉지와 사이프러스 나무...
들판과 길들이 유화 속 그림처럼 펼쳐져 있습니다.

너무 익숙해서
되려 낯선 느낌이 듭니다.

북쪽 성당을 향해 가던 중
이곳의 명물인 벼룩시장을 지나
도시 한가운데 작은 광장을 끼고 있는 카페에서
잠시 쉬고 있습니다.

말년의 세잔이 자주
햇살을 즐기곤 했던 곳이었습니다.

* A Letter from the South of France

The sunlight here is so beautiful.

When I spread out a canvas in a landscape touched by such light,
I find myself nodding in agreement,
thinking that anyone would have tried
to capture with a brush
the lights drifting through the air.

The light that danced
as it crossed the shimmering air
was the very light I had seen in Van Gogh's paintings.

The Mediterranean, where the light is beautiful...
And I am traveling through Provence in the south of France,
where those winds reach.

I set out from Marseille,
passed through Arles,
where Van Gogh painted 'Sunflowers' and 'The Night Cafe',
and now I am in Aix-en-Provence.

This was the hometown of Paul Cezanne,
and the city where he spent his later years.

Mont Sainte-Victoire,
which Cezanne painted on canvas dozens of times...

Even in his later years,
when painting had become difficult for him,
I imagine he must have looked toward that mountain.

This is my first time here,
yet the familiar hills and cypress trees
that I have seen so often in Impressionist paintings...

The fields and roads unfold before me
like scenes from an oil painting.

They are so familiar
that, strangely,
they feel unfamiliar.

On my way toward the cathedral to the north,
I passed the flea market,
one of the local attractions,
and am now taking a short rest
at a cafe beside a small square
in the heart of the city.

It was a place where Cezanne,
in his later years,
would often sit and enjoy the sunlight.
