때로는
나뭇잎 사이로 부서지는 햇살들과 이야기한다.

때로는
소리 없이 지나는 작은 바람과 이야기를 한다.

때로는
지구 반대편 이름 없는 작은 골목에서
알지 못하는 소녀의 팔에 걸린
밝은 초록색 가방과 이야기를 한다.

그 가방은
그녀의 몸집만큼이나 컸지만 그녀의 존재감을 가리지 않았으며,
그 시간 그 골목에서 유일한 초록이었다.
무엇보다 그녀의 금발 머릿결과 잘 어울렸다.

아마도
소녀와 나는
사진으로 만난 이백오십분의 일초 이후
스쳐서라도 다시 만날 일은 없을 것이다.

그리고
그녀의 가방과도
다시는 만나지 못할 것이다.

갑작스레 찾아온 만남이었고
다시는 재회를 기약할 수 없는 제대로 된 이별이었다.

하지만 그런 일들은
언제나 겪는 일상적인 만남이고
금세 잊힐 별스럽지 않은 이별이다.

기억에 남을 수 있는 만남과 이별은
살면서 겪는 수많은 그것들 중 몇이나 될까?

가슴에 담겨
마음에 남을 수 있는
만남과 이별은
아프든 기쁘든 축복일 것이다.

Sometimes
I talk with the sunlight
breaking through the leaves.

Sometimes
I talk with the little wind
that passes without a sound.

Sometimes,
in a nameless little alley
on the other side of the earth,
I talk with a bright green bag
hanging from the arm
of a girl I did not know.

The bag
was almost as big as she was,
yet it did not hide her presence.
It was the only green
in that alley, at that moment.
Above all,
it suited her blond hair.

Perhaps
the girl and I,
after that one two-hundred-and-fiftieth of a second
when we met through a photograph,
will never meet again,
not even by chance.

And
I will never meet
her bag again, either.

It was a meeting
that came without warning,
and a proper farewell,
with no promise of meeting again.

But such things
are the ordinary meetings
we have in life,
unremarkable farewells
soon forgotten.

Of all the countless meetings and farewells
we will have in our lives,
how many will remain in our memory?

The meetings and farewells
that we hold close
and keep in our hearts,
whether they bring pain or joy,
will be a blessing.
